Before it became associated with James Bond, the cottage was leased by legendary playwright, composer and actor Noël Coward. Following damage during the Second World War, Coward lovingly restored the property and spent many peaceful days here overlooking the English Channel.

It was also here that Coward discovered a passion for painting, inspired by the spectacular coastline, dramatic cliffs and ever-changing light that make St Margaret’s Bay so unique.

In 1951, when Coward decided to leave St Margaret’s Bay, Ian Fleming, creator of the James Bond novels, took over the lease and used the cottage as a weekend retreat. Fleming is believed to have written parts of several Bond books here, including Moonraker.

The dramatic Dover coastline captured Fleming’s imagination so completely that it became the setting for key scenes in Moonraker, with the villain Hugo Drax building his infamous rocket nearby.
